UÇAN HOLLANDALI

Based on a sea tale of Dutch sailors dating back to 1600, the story is based on a tale by Heinrich Heine. Wagner's creative process for The Flying Dutchman opera began after Heine's inspiration and a stormy ship voyage he experienced. The Flying Dutchman opera, which premiered in 1843 at the Königliches Hoftheater in Dresden, takes place on the Norwegian coast in the 18th century. The main character, the Dutchman, is a sailor who defies the seas and storms and is cursed to live forever in the seas and deprived of his mortality because he does not give up against the storms. There is only one condition for breaking the curse: to find pure and true love on land, which he can visit once every seven years! The Dutchman's punishment will only be forgiven by the sincere love of a sacrificial and loyal woman. At the end of a seven-year period, will he be able to find the love of the woman who can save him from this curse when he goes ashore again? Wagner crowned the general position of female characters in his operas and the examples of reaching a solution through the woman's self-sacrifice with the character of Senta in The Flying Dutchman opera. The Flying Dutchman opera, which made its first performance as the opening work of the 15th International Istanbul Opera and Ballet Festival, continues to meet with art lovers in our 2024 – 2025 art season.
